Grade 6 at Norseman
Grade 6 can feel like a big transition. Students are moving from Primary/Junior to Middle School, and some are starting their first year as a Norseman student. We have provided some information that parents and students might find useful below. If you have any questions at all, don't hesitate to contact us or talk directly to the school.
First Day Procedure
On the first day of school, class lists are posted on chart paper on the school walls outside near the portables. At 8:15 am each teacher will stand beside their posted list and once children find their name, they line up with that teacher. Students should arrive early as it can be a little overwhelming. Students will then follow their teacher through their entry door to the classroom.
Gym - The girls and boys each have their own gym teacher and change room. It is not necessary, but if students wish to do so, they can purchase Norseman gym clothes (shorts and t-shirt) from their teacher once classes have started, info will be provided in the early weeks of the year. The students will need running shoes for gym days.
Lockers - A locker will be assigned and students can buy a lock from the office for $5 or can bring their own Dudley lock from home.
In September, grade 6 students will have an opportunity to audition for the instrumental music program, band or strings. No previous music training is required. If the student is accepted, they will list three instruments in which they are interested. Music instruction takes place during the school day.
Most middle school classrooms are located on the second floor. Middle school students are on a rotary schedule. They move from class to class as a group based on the schedule the homeroom teacher gives them. Their belongings and books are kept in a locker when they don’t need them.
Middle school students may use the washrooms across from the office on the first floor or those on the second floor.
School Hours and Recess
School starts at 8:25 am and finishes at 3:05 pm. There are 15-minute recesses in the morning and afternoon. Lunch is from 11:15 am until 12:15 pm. Students in grades 6-8 may go for lunch off premises unaccompanied, if they have permission from a parent/guardian.
Eating Lunch at School
Norseman has boomerang lunches, which means anything sent in the lunch bag and not consumed comes back home. Please do not send any peanut or nut related products. Norseman offers the “Lunch Lady” program; every Monday and Thursday your child can purchase a hot lunch to enjoy at school. A menu and information about advance purchasing this service will be sent home in September or you can visit the website at www.thelunchlady.ca.
Middle school students are allowed to leave the property at lunch time without a parent pickup. At the beginning of the year, parents may indicate and sign a permission form allowing their child to leave (or not to leave) the property. If allowed by the parent - the procedure then followed is for the student to sign out from the office any day they are leaving for lunchtime. Students go to the nearby restaurants, for a shopping spree at dollarama, a local park, or sometimes groups of friends will being their own lunch to one friends' house, to eat there instead of at school. Students must be back at school in time for the 12:15 bell.
At Norseman, the middle school has lunch in the gymnasium from 11:15 am to 11:35 am with their peers from their class and then they take their lunch recess from 11:35 am to 12:15 pm. Two TDSB lunch room staff will be on duty during both the lunch recess and lunch in the gymnasium.
